Beth Thompson

I have always been a maker! I learned to sew as a little girl with my grandmother, spent 20 years as a woodworker, and used creative activities with schoolchildren as an occupational therapist. My jewelry creations took off in new directions upon retirement when I took a beginning metalworking class at Maine College of Art. I have been working hard at developing the skills of soldering, annealing and hammering techniques with silver and copper ever since! Many of my pieces feature the technique of fold-forming which involves heating the silver to make it pliable enough to be folded, then shaping, reheating, and unfolding.  Another technique I enjoy is using finely polished hammers to apply texture to the surface of the metal to imitate the shimmering light on the ocean, the subtle veins of a leaf, or the folds of a flower. My inspiration for my designs comes from the natural world around me here on the beautiful coast of Maine. I hope to bring delight to each person who wears my jewelry.

I am so happy to be included in Saltwater Artists Collective this year. You can see more of my work at https://instagram.com/beththompsondesigns
