David Higgins
Dave Higgins has been a photographer and educator for more than 50 years. Born in Portland, Dave is a lifelong resident of the state of Maine and has lived all over the southern and central parts of the state. He is a graduate of CMVTI, USM and earned a Master of Fine Arts - Visual Arts from Vermont College. For 25 years Higgins was a graphic arts teacher and resided in western Maine. Upon retiring to the Midcoast 20 years ago, Dave taught photography and design at local art societies and public schools. In 2005 he was a MARC artist in residence at Carina House on Monhegan Island.
A life long photographer, Dave's work covers a wide spectrum of interests. Although much of his work could be called landscape, Higgins feels it is more about subtle relationships than grand vistas. He places emphasis on line, tone, form and compositional relationships. Twenty years ago he moved his photography completely into the digital realm which he feels allows him the freedom to simplify and to blur the borders between black and white and color, between photography and other art forms, and especially between the real and the perceived.
Fifteen years ago, these ideas led him back to painting, a medium he had not used since he was in his twenties. Compositional techniques and points of view demonstrated in his photographic work readily transferred into his painting and drawing. Color studies and brush textures went from his paintings to his photos. He now works in both mediums, often works the same scene in both and finds his options for expressing his vision are truly limitless.
Higgins' work is exhibited and published throughout Maine and New England. Locally (Midcoast Maine), he has exhibited in recent years at Round Top Center for the Arts, the Chocolate Church, the Damariscotta River Grill, the Centre Street Gallery in Bath and the Saltwater Artists Gallery.
