Thomas Greenier

I find plein air painting outdoors in nature to be exhilarating, as well as a spiritual experience. I began plein air painting on Monhegan 30 years ago, after taking watercolor lessons. My wife, Sarah and I stayed out there for a week or two each summer at Eider Duck cottage on Fish Beach with a group of other Maine artists. I was always inspired to paint outdoors right from the beginning.
We exhibited at outdoor art shows throughout Maine and New England for ten years, then in 2006 we opened Greenier Gallery next to our home in Bath. It was then that I switched over to painting in watercolor to oils, as they lent themselves more easily to outdoor painting.
I have taken many great workshops, most notably from Tony Couch, Larry Moore, Don Demers and most recently, Thomas Atkins.
My wife and I most enjoy outdoor painting along the Maine coast locally, as well as in Monhegan, Bar Harbor and New Harbor.
I still work a traditional job as an engineer, but take every opportunity to paint, as I find it very meditative and inspiring to be outdoors with Mother Nature. Being surrounded by the sights, sounds & smells of a scene inspires me to capture that feeling and translate it onto my canvas.
